I doubt that the outcome would change if it was all boiled down to the lowest common denominator anyway, but the way I the whole issue is this: The debate about rights, marriage, etc. is one of church vs. state in it's simplest form. We have laws on the books that are based on teaching and principle, and they discriminate against a certain segment of the population. They should be changed according to the core tenets of the constitution. End of story. We send troops to fight governments that we deem unfair in their repressive practices of religious discrimination and based caste systems and yet we're maintaining a similar structure here (albeit on a MUCH less severe level, of course.)
